| This course provides a basis
for exploring the rise of the first complex societies. Archaeological
records from the Near East and Mesoamerica provide evidence of key aspects
of culture change, including urbanization, technology, sociopolitical and
religious institutions, science, writing, and the emergence of specialists,
such as artists, soldiers, priests and kings.
The archaeological core of information is balanced with a critical examination
and discussion of the prominent theories offered by anthropologists and
historians to explain the causes for and implications of these profound
changes in culture.
