This course provides a basis
for exploring the rise of the first complex societies. Archaeological
records from the Near East and Mesoamerica provide evidence of key aspects
of culture change, including urbanization, technology, sociopolitical and
religious institutions, science, writing, and the emergence of specialists,
such as artists, soldiers, priests and kings.
