Site 3. Eastern Cross Timbers.

The Eastern Cross Timbers have developed on Woodbine Sandstone bedrock. This bedrock produces hilly terrain with sandy loam soils supporting oak woodlands.

The Woodbine Sandstone bedrock contains clay-rich beds which help give the rock distinct layering.

Soils produced in this region are sandy loams low in organic content. Like the soils in the Western Cross Timbers, these soils are relatively erodible by surface water run-off and produce hilly terrain.

Native vegetation in the Eastern Cross Timbers includes Little Bluestem, Purpletop (grasses), shrubs such as Mesquite and Post Oak and Blackjack Oak trees.
